For Machu Picchu trips, if you come from abroad, then first you need to arrive in Lima the capital city of Peru, need to spend a hotel night. Most decent hotels are in Miraflores district which is 45 minutes’ drive from the airport.
Then for the 2nd day, you can go back to the airport and take a domestic flight to Cusco, which is one hour flight. For acclimatization is best to spend one or two days there. So the best thing is the 1st or 2nd day to do the Cusco city tour in the afternoon, which regularly is from 1.30pm to 6.00pm.
Then for next day or 3rd day, you can do the sacred valley tour, which is a full day tour, to visit: Pisac ruins, later Pisac Artisans indigenous market, after that a nice drive along the Urubamba river, later a visit of the stunning Inca fortress “Ollantaytambo”.
This sacred valley can be done within two days, (4th day) in which for private tours you can also visit Chincheros or Maras /Moray salt mines, or a visit to the living Inca descent village of Patacancha and Willoq. Also, options to do river rafting, horseback riding, mountain bike, ATVs, etc.
For next day (5th day), you can take the train to Machu Picchu, which will take around 1.40 hours train ride, but beforehand, you need to buy the entrances tickets to MP, also the shuttle bus to MP, to hire a reputable good tour guide, and there is a risk that the weather could be bad and get cloudy, rainy or foggy, that´s why I recommend spending a hotel night in Aguas Calientes town.
So next day 5th or 6th day, you can also enjoy detours in Machu Picchu, such a climb to the challenging Huaynapicchu Mountain, or a hike to the sun gate, or a soft hike to the Inca bridge, or just exploring more of Machu Picchu.
Then later in the afternoon a train back to Cusco. Next day to fly out.
For these fantastic Machu Picchu trips, you need to bring your passports with you all the time for hotels, for trains, to enter MP, etc. also bring rain gear all the time with you, mosquito repellent, sun cream, in Cusco the nights can be cold, getting sometimes 30-40F , and during the day the temperature can get around 70-75F.
Therefore, allow 5-6 days for an enjoyable Machu Picchu trips together with Cusco and Sacred Valley tour too.
